Happy Holidays!

Hi everyone. It’s been a busy few months with the release of Gears of Revolution, and everything that goes with that. I hope you had a good summer and that your fall is full of friends and family.

Now that I am home for a while I wanted to answer some of the most common questions readers have been asking me.

  1. Topping the list is, Will there be a third book in the Mysteries of Cove series?

I’m excited to say the answer is yes. Embers of Destruction will be released fall of 2017. Keep an eye out here and on my Facebook page for the exact release date, cover, etc.

I’m so excited to have you read Embers of Destruction. It will be the biggest and best of the series. New dragons, new inventions, and new characters. Unfortunately, Trenton, Kallista, and their friends are going to face bigger threats than they ever have.

  2. How many books will there be in the MofC series?

Since I first thought of the series, I knew this would be a trilogy. The character arcs, stories, and mysteries have been set up to last three books. I’ve considered writing a prequel at some point. This would be the story of how Cove came to be. But at this time there are no definite plans for this story.

  3. Will there ever be more books in the Farworld, Case File, or other past series?

I have lots of story ideas for old series and new series. But at this time I have no definite plans for additional books in any of my older series. I never say never, but at the moment, I am focused on new books.

  4. What are you currently working on?

Although I can’t formally announce them yet, I am working on two other series. One is a science-based graphic novel series for younger readers. The other is a middle grade fantasy series with a really fun twist. I’ll give you more information as soon as I can.

  5. Will you be posting more writing tips?

It’s been a while since I’ve posted any writing lessons, but I promise there will be more coming soon.

If you have more questions, post them here and I will try to answer them soon, In the mean time, have a great holiday season and read something fun!

  1. If we purchased books through a visit to our school and still have not received (though paid for them in cash), when will we get those books? My son was sent to school with $30 to buy hardback books. Just to let you know how important reading is, I’m presently unemployed and made significant efforts to save for the books in my budget, yet…no books?

    • yay i love your books personally cove is my favorite series. plz dont stop thats the only thing i like to

  2. I have yet to finish “Gears”, and I’ve checked it out twice from the library. I just don’t have any extra time to read it. I’ve had to return it before I finished it due to it having one or more hold request. I hope I can finish it before “Embers” is released. It would be pretty tragic if I didn’t.

  3. Your visit to my son’s school in Crestwood, KY made a big impression on him. He wanted to get the Cove books, but when I looked over them, I realized they’d be too hard for him to read since he’s only in 3rd grade. I’ve now read Fires of Invention and am currently reading Gears of Revolution to him. I ask questions as we go, and he’s doing great on comprehending it. I’m really enjoying the series as well. We’ll check into some of your other books as well. I just wanted to let you know your book tour made an impression.

    • Shelly,

Thanks so much! I love that you are reading together and doing Q&As. Kids seeing how much their parents love reading, and their parents reading with them makes such an incredible impact. My hat is off to you!

  4. Hi, Jeff. Just finished Fires of Invention and loved it. Learned a lot too, taking it apart afterwards. 😀 I was at the Storymaker’s event (I’m the chick with the Chinese fantasy in the critique room, if you remember me.) and I’m trying to apply the four part theory to the last two quarters of the book and I have a question for you about the twist. Does it have to be a change in reality (it is in “Fires”), or can it merely be a paradigm shift within the MC? Is it stronger one way or the other? I’m trying to think of examples of the second option, but I have overcooked noodles for brains. 😀 Thanks so much for everything! I’m looking forward to Gears.

  5. Victoria,

The fourth part does not have to be a change in reality. It just has to be a reveal that makes everything clear to the MC. So the second quarter is the start of the actual adventure, but is typically some sort of misdirection. The halfway point is where the MC learns something that sends them on the true path. The last quarter is where they know completely understand what is happening but are racing some sort of clock or other pressure to complete their goal. Does that make sense?

  6. Shelly,

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that you are not only reading to your son, but reading with him. Reading together and discussing what is happening is the BEST! Hat’s off to you for being such an amazing mom.

  7. David,

How is the reading coming? Third time is the charm I hear!

  8. Wow! Thanks for the reply, Jeff! No, I’ve yet to finish book two of MOC. GROWL. I’m currently reading the last of The Guardian Herd, a fascinating series about pegasi (yeah, I’m a boy and I love it). I’ll be reading D.J. MacHale’s latest book, “Curse of the Boggin, The Library” next, and after that, hopefully, I’ll read Gears of Revolution, though I’ve looked for it twice in the library, and I never saw it, even though the library catalog said it was in that library. It won’t be very long now before I finish it.

I can’t even use the old “I have a job” excuse. I do have a job, but I’m getting very short shifts. Also, I did just get a new phone (my very first one) last month, and I have been spending a lot of time on it. Probably TOO much time.

Anyway, like I said, I’ll finish it soon.

  9. keep up the great work i love the cove series so much i read to my class and my mom and dad.you inspire me so much i chose to do my book report for 5th grade on cove.love your work.you rock XD ^-^ }{i there
